Probably I will never understand why and how, if I was taking care of myself, eating healthy and walking on regular basis, but it happened... It was shocking at first, it was scary and all the most pessimistic thoughts came to my mind. I wasn't craving sweets or eating candies but I developed gestacional diabetes,
During pregnancy usually around the 24th week many women develop gestational diabetes. A diagnosis of gestational diabetes doesn't mean that you had diabetes before you conceived, or that you will have diabetes after giving birth. But it's important to follow your doctor's advice regarding blood glucose (blood sugar) levels while you're planning your pregnancy, so you and your baby both remain healthy.
This can happen for many reason like stress, hormones (the more common one) or because your body can't manage glucose or even family history, maybe someone in your family has it and that gives more posibilites to carry it too, it has no symptoms you until you get your test you'll know about it.
I'm pretty much on paleo diet right now, I don't really wanna call it a "diet" it's more like a meals plan that I'm following where I had to cut off carbs, sugar of course and starches. It's been hard, believe me!
But what can you do when you have gestacional diabetes?
First, DON'T FREAK OUT!!! There's no need to be stressed, that's not good for you and the baby, remain calmed and chilled. It's not the end of the world. Have faith and you'll be fine. It sounds scary but if you follow your doctor's advice and do things right, there's nothing to worry about/
Walk, walk, walk, exercise, yoga, anything to burn those calories. After you eat, I want to clarify you are supposed to eat 3 meals a day and 2 snack in between. Go for a walk after you eat, or wait 5-10 min and then walk around the block for 15-20 min. Believe me this is gonna make such a difference when you test your glucose levels after your meal.
Eat healthy, you can eat as much veggies as you want, that's good for vegetarians moms but if you're a meat lover like me, there's so many recipes on the internet you can cook and still so delicious. Specially food cooked in the oven. Avoid frying your food or too much oil.
Also I love fruits and at first when I found out I had diabetes I drastically stopped eating fruits, but errrr!! Big mistake, fruits are a great source of folic acid and vitamins, you can still eat fruit but measured portions.
Test your sugar levels 4 times a day, (I know it's kinda annoying but it's for the best) do it once you wake up, one hour after breakfast, one hour after lunch and finally one hour after dinner.
Sometimes in the hospital they just give this meal plan but they don't specify what can you eat, so pretty much I recommend you eat paleo, (also called caveman diet) you can control carbs and straches and limit them to half of a cup or less than that.
Very important, drink a lot of water!! And don't starve yourself if you do that could end up in a very negative consequence for both mom and baby. I know it doesn't sound easy but I can give you my word, you can make it through!! You are so motivated to it for that amazing baby inside you.
You get use to this new lifestyle and it's actually so much healthier for both mom and baby! The exercise it's gonna help for labor too, you are gonna deliver faster and also you'll be in a good shape after the pregnancy.
So I'd say focus on the positive things, there's always a reason why things happen that way. Learn, breath and stay strong!
